2006 Southeast Michigan Tobacco Counteradvertising Contest

CONTEST STEPS

How It Works

Eligibility:
All students in all grades (elementary, middle and high school) in Southeastern Michigan are eligible to enter the contest. The advertisements they create must be anti-tobacco and should address cigarettes or other forms of tobacco use, and/or secondhand smoke. Entry deadline: All entries must be received or postmarked no later than
April 30, 2007. One entry per student, please.

Steps in the Contest:

1) As a homework assignment, ask students to:

a) Bring in a tobacco advertisement (e.g. from a magazine) or promotional item that advertises a tobacco product (e.g. hat, keychain).

b) Have students’ parents or guardians sign the contest entry form with artwork release statement.

2) In class, form small groups to discuss ads. Possible discussion questions include:

a) What is being advertised?

b) Who would the ad appeal to?

c) What messages does it send about tobacco use? What does the ad/item suggest tobacco would do for someone who uses it?

d) Is there anything misleading about the ad? What, if any, information about tobacco is left out of the ad?

e) What does the advertiser want someone to do in response to the ad?

3) Based on the discussion, students create an anti-tobacco “counteradvertisement”:

a) Poster—no larger than 18” x 24”, preferably on white poster board

b) Computer-generated artwork, submitted in MS Word, PDF or as an image file (JPEG, TIF, PSD, EPS, GIF)

c) Radio commercial—30-60 seconds, submitted on an audio cassette or an mp3-format file on a CD-ROM or floppy disk

d) Song—2-4 minutes, submitted on an audio cassette or an mp3-format file on a CD-ROM or floppy disk

e) Television commercial—30-60 seconds, submitted on a VHS video cassette, as a quicktime video or an mp3 format file on a DVD

f) Music video—2-4 minutes, submitted on a VHS video cassette or as a quicktime video file on a DVD

Note that this year, we are asking that entries other than traditional poster advertisements be submitted in digital format whenever possible. This will facilitate posting winning entries on the contest website.

4) Students should also write a typed statement (maximum of 350 words) describing their work. This statement should focus on the counterad’s intended message, but may also address any unique aspects of the production of the counterad. We would be grateful if an electronic version of the statement (e.g., on a floppy disk) can be provided in addition to a hard copy.

5) When counteradvertisements are complete, students should complete the anonymous evaluation survey. Exception: NO evaluation surveys will be required for grades Kindergarten-3rd.
